I spent the weekend in Big Sur at a place called Vicente Flat.  You have to take a trail to get there.

If you need me, I'll be in my tent.

WOW THIS PLACE LOOKS AMAZING!!!
how long was the trail till you found your spot?

is it basically open long flat land then turns into the forest?

It is an amazing place. The trail isn't so bad. There is some elevation gain, mostly over the first two miles. It's around five miles until you get to the Vicente Flat area to camp. Here is the webpage I used to find the trail:

I disagree with his opinion that the trail is not for casual hiking. As long as you keep an eye out for poison oak you'll be all right.
